Washington — President Bush has signed into law a port security bill authorizing $3.4 billion over five years for security measures.
Congress passed the bill September 30 before adjourning to campaign ahead of November congressional elections.
At the October 13 signing ceremony, Bush said, “Our seaports are a gateway to commerce, a source of opportunity, and a provider of jobs.” But the ports could also be targets for terrorists, he said, and the U.S. government is “determined to protect them.” Read the press release here.

I Have a question… These new security procedures won´t cause a delay in the US IMPORT processes? The containers won´t be used by more time than the usual, so there will be a increasind demand on the containers?
and demurrage taxes to be paid?
Good question….
With the implementation of any new screening process there is the risk of delay. However, I am confident, if needed, adjustments will be made by carriers and port personnel to minimize excessive delay as it will cost them time and money as well. Unfortunately, in today’s environment it seems we have no choice.
