Correct labeling on export shipments will ensure proper handling, conceal the identity of the contents, help receivers identify shipments and meet shipping regulations. Do not advertise what is in your package as it will promote theft.
Your buyer should specify what export marks are required for easy identification, listed below are the markings needed, however, your buyer might add additional requirements.
* Shipper's mark
* Country of Origin
* Weight marking (pounds and kilograms)
* Number of packages and size of cases
* International handling marks
* Cautionary markings (if required)
* Port of entry
* Labels for hazardous materials (if required)
To prevent delay, legibility is important. Symbols and letters are generally stenciled on the package in water-proof black ink on three sides of the carton. Also, to avoid confusion old markings should be removed.
Customs regulations regarding labeling are strickly enforced. Most freight forwarders and export packing specialists can provide the necessary information regarding specific regulations.
Unless otherwise instructed by the buyer, label the goods in English. Your buyer may also require markings to be in the language of the port of destination. Your freight forwarder should be able to instruct you on the appropriate symbols used for cautionary or hazardous shipments.
